The Cape Town Cycle Tour, the world’s largest timed cycling event, also became the most inclusive sporting event in 2013 when they changed the rules of this 35,000 entrant event to accommodate children with disabilities towed in buggies by able-bodied cyclists.
Not only are buggy teams allowed to participate, but the organisers have gone over an above to ensure safety and inclusion for all. In the week leading up to the event, all buggy teams attend a special safety briefing led by the race director and race doctor where all emergency procedures are explained and a detailed information pack distributed, highlighting medical points, exit routes, and sweeper bus operations. Each buggy team is allocated a tracking device so that the race and medical team can trace them at any given time during the event.
